TunFun

The proposed block fills the existing gap in the city. In its architecture it seeks a connection to the existing tunnel structure and its void. The program (child play and bicycle store) that is currently the fill-in of the old tunnel, is relocated to the upper floors of the new block. This will make the square more lively and is more celebrating for our children.

Looking at the existing square, first thing to notice is the chaos on the street. Five streets meet each other in a spasmodic manner. Cars, bicycles, pedestrians all cross each other, and often more then ones, while pushing each other to the side. Statistics proof, that the number of accidents have a more then average frequency on this location. The new design offers a safe and qualitative solution.

The existing square lacks facades. The only façade that faces the square is of the Portuguese synagogue, but with its crooked plinth is has lost its strength. The square has become indefinable, since the constructing of the existing tunnel. The proposed block  restores the urban fabric and gives it new facades on all orientations.

On top of the existing void (on top of the tunnel) a new void is placed on all the floors of the proposed block, allowing perspectives from the upper floors to the deepest tunnels and provides sufficient daylight penetration.

The design is a modern architecture to regulate the contemporary infrastructure and to restore the historic fabric.
